On the one hand, …, but on the other hand, … ne demek?
"On the one hand, …, but on the other hand, …." Türkçede "Bir yandan …, ama öte yandan …." demektir ve bir konunun zıt iki yönünü karşılaştırmanın klasik yoludur. Bir teklifin ya da çalışma düzeninin artısını ve eksisini yan yana koyarken kullanılır. Okunuşu "an dı van hend, …, bat an di adır hend, …." şeklindedir. Örneğin "On the one hand, the offer is good, but on the other hand, the office is far." (an dı van hend, di ofır iz gud, bat an di adır hend, di ofis iz far.) cümlesi "Bir yandan teklif iyi, ama öte yandan ofis uzak." demektir. Her iki boşluğa da tam bir cümle gelir: the client is happy ile the team is tired gibi. B1 seviyesindeki bu kalıp karar toplantılarında ve seçenekler tartılırken sık geçer. En yaygın hata "In one hand, it's cheaper, but in other hand, it's slower." demektir; doğrusu "On the one hand, it's cheaper, but on the other hand, it's slower." biçimidir. Kalıp "on" ve "the" ile sabittir.
